ENTRYWAY — WVUM Rockefeller Neuroscience

LOCATION MORGANTOWN, WV
This entryway addition to the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute was designed to facilitate the ongoing interdisciplinary research, learning, and treatment for a variety of critical neurological conditions already happening in the building. Flanked by a large zinc paneled awning that stretches out toward the new parking area; the entryway is the new centralized focal point for patients and doctors alike. Where a dark corner once existed, a large glass curtain wall now spans 40 feet, allowing natural light into new spaces.
The zinc awning punctures through the curtain wall and carries into the open lobby space where there is a large wall graphic, created by Neuroscientist Greg Dunn. These colors and curves twist and turn, making their way up the large staircase that connects to the existing building.
Sectional and material changes in the ceiling open up in some areas to allow for views to the second floor, including an area of structural glass that allows the staircase artwork to span directly up the wall. On the second floor, a rounded cantilevering balcony looks out over the open entryway.
The zinc canopy balances on hollow steel tube columns.
The grand entry stair rails incorporate milled solid wood hand rails which link the materials back to the original space, these are supported by stainless steel flats with tensioned cable guards which allow un-hindered view through the space.
