Carnegie Mellon University’s Yttri Lab at The Mellon Institute was a renovation from an existing, underutilized lab space. The program required three separate labs for conducting neruoscience research, as well as an open collaborative space computer work space. An open glass door and a large window open out from Yttri’s private office to give an even greater sense of openness.
Yttri saw it as a crucial to have inviting, less traditional areas for his students to conduct the majority of their computational work. Seen below is an image of the lab in it’s original condition before the renovation.
These new spaces all have highly flexible and movable furniture systems that allow for spontaneous collaboration throughout the work process; while different acoustic elements allow for students to create pockets of privacy when desired.
